Description

Dulbecco′s Modified Eagle′s Medium (DMEM) is a modification of Basal Medium Eagle (BME). Currently, DMEM is one of the most widely used media. Several major modifications have been made to the original formulation:

  1. The original formulation contained 1000 mg/L of glucose and was used to culture embryonic mouse cells. Most of the DMEMs manufactured by various vendors including PurMa Biologics contain 4.5g/L glucose. Additionally, PurMa Biologics offers a (1.5 g/L) low glucose (P3SO28105) condition.
  2. It contains fourfold more amino acids and vitamins compared to the original formulation. Since then. It has made DMEM a good choice for growing the primary cell culture of mouse and chicken cells, as well as a variety of normal and transformed cells. Each of these media offers a different combination of L-glutamine and sodium pyruvate.
  3. It has several fold more buffering capacity (3.7g/L NaHCO3)

DMEM Contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors. Therefore, it requires supplementation, commonly with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS).

DMEM contains:

  • High glucose (4.5g/L)
  • Non-essential amino acids
  • Sodium pyruvate (0.11 g/L)
  • Phenol red (0.0015g/L)
  • L-glutamine (0.585 g/L)
