What is GMEM?
GMEM was developed by MacPherson and Stoker as a richer version of Basal Medium Eagle (BME), specifically to support the BHK-21 cell line. It raises the concentration of amino acids and vitamins and is typically used with added tryptose phosphate broth, which provides extra nutrients for demanding cultures. Like other basal media, GMEM supplies salts, amino acids, vitamins, and glucose, and it is completed with serum and glutamine before use.
How GMEM differs from BME and MEM
GMEM starts from Eagle’s original media but increases the levels of several amino acids and vitamins, and it usually includes higher glutamine and added tryptose phosphate broth. That extra richness is what makes it well suited to the dense BHK-21 cultures used in virology, while leaner media such as EMEM suit cells that do not need the additional nutrients.

What is in GMEM?

Before use, GMEM is completed with serum (commonly 10% FBS), L-glutamine or a stable glutamine dipeptide, and often tryptose phosphate broth. Keep it in a CO2 incubator, store it refrigerated and protected from light, warm it gently before use, and keep the same lot across an experiment for consistency.
