DMSO or DMSO-free?

DMSO passes into cells quickly and is a strong cryoprotective agent, which is why most PurMa cryoprotective media contain it. It also has drawbacks: it is toxic to cells, and it has to be washed out after thawing, which takes time and loses cells.

Choose a DMSO-free medium only for cells that are damaged by DMSO or perform poorly with it. For other cells, PurMa recommends the DMSO versions.

The serum-free media contain no serum or animal products. They are fully synthetic, which avoids the batch-to-batch variation serum can bring to survival and recovery after thawing.
