Common Types of Pathogens in Cell Culture

Generally, four main types of pathogens are responsible for contaminating most cell lines: bacteria, molds/yeasts, viruses, and mycoplasma. Bacterial contamination typically leads to visible turbidity and rapid pH changes, while molds and yeasts may form filaments or colonies visible under the microscope. Viral contamination is often more subtle, frequently going unnoticed until functional changes in the cells are observed. Mycoplasma, one of the most problematic contaminants, lacks a cell wall and is difficult to detect with routine media appearance. Each of these pathogen types can negatively impact cell morphology, metabolism, growth rate, and experimental endpoints.

How Contamination Spreads During Cell Division

When cells divide into contaminated media, the pathogens are passively carried along with the daughter cells. This means that even a low-level contamination at an early stage can ultimately spread throughout the entire culture, incubator, and, potentially, other cell lines handled in parallel.
