Charcoal-Stripped Fetal Bovine Serum (CS-FBS)

Fetal bovine serum treated with activated charcoal to remove hormones and steroids.

  • Activated-carbon stripping removes steroids and hormones
  • For studies where background hormones or steroids must be minimized

Description

Background

Charcoal stripped FBS (CS-FBS) is fetal bovine serum treated with activated carbon to remove hormones, steroids, and other lipophilic substances.

  • This process removes all the non-polar material such as lipophilic (lipid-related) materials (viruses, certain growth factors, hormones, and cytokines).
  • Acts as an effective blocker agent in immunoassay systems as well as immunoprecipitating analysis (by coating the Sepharose-activated beads in order to prevent nonspecific binding).
  • Moreover, it performs the function regardless of the molecular weight of the target.

PurMa Biologics applies Norit A charcoal coated with Dextran T-70 to manufacture a high-quality Charcoal-Stripped Fetal Bovine Serum.

PurMa™ Charcoal-Stripped FBS (CS-FBS)

  • PurMaTM Premium FBS is of USA origin.
  • Goes through heat inactivation and gamma irradiation.
  • Following the stripping, the FBS goes through heat inactivation process.
  • PurMa Biologics performs vigorous analysis following the stripping and will provide a certificate of analysis.
  • The procedure depletes any residue of  mycoplasma, steroids and hormones, and other pathogens.
  • Acceptable level of endotoxin (10 mg/Dl) and hemoglobin (20 mg/Dl).
  • Due to the loss of a vast variety of hormones and steroids (such as growth factors), we recommend using 15-20% CS-FBS in your media to ensure cultured cells’ wellbeing.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes does CS-FBS come in?

Charcoal-Stripped Fetal Bovine Serum (CS-FBS) is supplied in 50 mL and 500 mL bottles.

What does charcoal stripping remove from FBS?

Dextran coated charcoal treatment strips small lipophilic molecules, principally steroid hormones, plus some growth factors and cytokines. What remains supports culture with a very low endogenous hormone background.

When should I use charcoal stripped FBS?

Use it for hormone response work where serum steroids would mask the effect you are measuring: oestrogen and androgen receptor studies, nuclear receptor assays, and any dosing experiment that needs a clean hormone baseline.

Is CS-FBS tested, and is a Certificate of Analysis available?

Yes. It is manufactured in house in the USA and each lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Lot specific storage and expiry are printed on the bottle and listed on the COA.

Do you offer bulk pricing and purchase orders for CS-FBS?

Yes. Custom formulations, non standard fill volumes and bulk orders are all available, since everything is made in house. Purchase orders are accepted and bulk pricing is available. Request a quote from this page and we will come back with pricing and lead time.
