Trypsin EDTA Free 0.5%
Ultra-pure EDTA-free Trypsin at 0.5% for routine dissociation of adherent cells.
- Ultra-pure trypsin, a serine protease, for detaching adherent cells
- Supplied in HBSS, available with or without phenol red
Description
Background
PurMa™ Trypsin EDTA Free 0.5% is a trypsin without EDTA — an ultra-pure trypsin solution used to gently dissociate adherent cells in mammalian cell culture. Trypsin is a serine protease that cleaves peptide bonds at lysine and arginine residues (except when followed by proline), releasing cells from the culture surface and from one another for passaging, counting, and downstream work.
Why Trypsin Without EDTA?
Many trypsin solutions include EDTA, a chelating agent that binds calcium and magnesium ions to speed up detachment. PurMa™ Trypsin EDTA Free 0.5% contains no EDTA, giving you a gentler, more controlled dissociation. It’s preferred when working with cells sensitive to EDTA or to calcium/magnesium depletion, or when you want to preserve divalent-cation-dependent surface proteins and functions.
Features and Benefits
- 10X ready-to-use stock — no additional ingredients needed. Dilute with PurMa™ Ultra-Pure Cell Culture Suited Water (Cat# P3W010101) to your working concentration.
- Contains no EDTA, calcium, magnesium, or heavy metals.
- Contains no serine protease inhibitors (DFP, TLCK, APMSF, AEBSF).
- Contains no phytates or phytic acid salts (e.g., myo-inositol) that can inhibit trypsin activity.
- Ultra-pure trypsin (HPLC-purified, 99% purity), sourced from bovine pancreas.
- Rigorously evaluated for yeast, mold, mycoplasma, and endotoxin.
Available Concentrations
PurMa Biologics produces trypsin in 0.05%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 2.5%, and 5% — both with EDTA and EDTA-free — in phenol red or phenol-red-free formats, so you can match the strength and indicator to your protocol.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes does EDTA free Trypsin 0.5% come in?
Trypsin EDTA Free 0.5% is supplied in 1 x 100 mL, 6 x 100 mL, 1 x 500 mL and 6 x 500 mL, with or without phenol red.
Why use trypsin without EDTA?
EDTA is a chelator that strips calcium and magnesium to loosen adhesion, which speeds detachment but is hard on some cells and interferes with assays that depend on those ions. An EDTA free trypsin is the right choice for sensitive primary cells, for downstream work involving calcium dependent proteins, and where divalent cations must be preserved.
Can I get it without calcium chloride or glucose?
Yes. Alongside the standard formulation it is available without sodium bicarbonate, without calcium chloride and without glucose.
Is it sterile, and do you provide a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Every lot is manufactured and quality controlled in house in Oklahoma City, and a Certificate of Analysis is available for every lot. Storage conditions and the expiry date for your specific lot are printed on the bottle and stated on that lot's COA.
Can you supply it in bulk or on a purchase order?
Yes. Custom formulations, non standard fill volumes and bulk orders are all available, since everything is made in house. Purchase orders are accepted and bulk pricing is available. Request a quote from this page and we will come back with pricing and lead time.
